Narrow House by Erwin Wurm- at Exhibition Center 38CC

The amazing Narrow House by world-famous  artist Erwin Wurm is the eye catcher of the ExtraOrdinary- Ordinary art manifestation of contemporary art organized by the exhibition center 38CC in Delft, The Netherlands. This  event of  today’s art of the daily life of ordinary people , runs parallel to the oeuvre of  the world-famous 17th century Delftse painter  Pieter de Hooch in the museum Prinsenhof.

Narrow House is on display at a very  unique location,  the Old Church in Delft.  The absurdist Narrow House  creates a fascinating contrast between the Gothic church  interior with it stained glass windows and the distorted bourgeois house. The house is, besides of course the width,  an exact replica of his parental house. It’s  16 meters (52 feet) long,   7 meters ( 22 feet) high  however  only 1, 38 meter ( 4, 52 feet) wide.

About the Artist :

Erwin Wurm is born on 27 July 1954 (age 65)  in  Bruck an der Mur, Styria, Austria.

In ‘The Artist Who Swallowed the World’, Wurm is quoted as saying: “I am interested in the everyday life. All the materials that surrounded me could be useful, as well as the objects, topics involved in contemporary society. My work speaks about the whole entity of a human being: the physical, the spiritual, the psychological and the political.”

Erwin Wurm’s works are in collections worldwide, such as for instance the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Walker Art Center, Museum Ludwig, Kunstmuseum St. Gallen [de], Musée d’art contemporain de Lyon, Museum of Old and New Art, and the Centre Pompidou.

About Narrow House :

With Narrow House , Wurm wanted to express tangible the distress and narrow-mindedness of his own upbringing and the time in which he grew up in up: post-World War II Austria. This limited view has affected Wurm’s philosophy of art strongly, and Narrow House is  an absurdly tight version of his parental home. From furniture to books, lights, rooms , dishes and bathtub etc.. literally everything in this house is narrow and downsized.  When walking  through the house , you start to  feel  the distress he must have  felt.  Truly an unique experience!

Delft is the last  European city where Narrow House  can be visited. After the exhibition, the art work will become part of the  West Collection in Philadelphia, USA.

    1. Thank you! Yes it was an unique experience.
The exhibition was organized by the Exhibition center where I work as volunteer .
During the 4 months exhibition the house somehow started to grow on you. I miss it now it is gone.

      Keep healthy ❤

    1. Thank you, Otto. No, it was not possible to sit on the toilet bowl, that room was too narrow to even get in 🙂
Keep safe and stay healthy. Francina

  1. Dear Francina,

That is an amazing piece of art and commentary.
The perspective of the lens makes the viewer
feel the claustrophobia. I think in some ways,
at one time or another, we all ‘live in’ just such
a space. It is only when I look at the photos and
read your words that I realize how damaging
and painful that is. Even though I feel the discomfort,
I am drawn to the photos. They are so powerful. It
is as if they live and breath. I doubt I would have the
courage to walk through that space, and yet I would
like to try. I am only about 5 hours from Philadelphia
and I will try my best to get to that exhibit when it arrives.
If I do, I will let you know.

    As ever,

    1. Dear Sarah,

Thank you for your much thoughtful and much appreciated comment on Erwin Wurm’s Narrow House.
Some of the visitors have the same reaction as you describe when in the house.
Om one way the artwork is very impressive due to the perfection of the down sizing,
yet on the other hand you feel the story behind the make of the artwork indeed.

It would be wonderful if you would get a chance to see it for yourself in Philly.
I am sure you will manage walking through.

      as ever,

  2. An excellent post. I felt discomfort just viewing the photos and imagining walking through the the tight corridors! Interesting perspective given that we are now living in smaller homes and condos.

    1. Thank you for you much appreciated comment on Narrow House.
Yes indeed our house are smaller now, well noticed.

Have a happy and healthy 2020!

    1. How lovely to hear from you, dear Lizzy!
